What Equiment Do I need to Play Rugby?
Rugby is played on many pitches around Atlanta. It also may be one of the least expensive Team Sports to get into. All you really need is a an oblong Rugby Ball. As players progress and start tackling they add mouth guards. Some players, mostly forwards, wear crum caps that protect the head and ears. What is the difference between Rugby Union and Rugby League?
The most immediately identifiable difference between Rugby Union, established in 1871, and Rugby League, established in 1895 is the number of players on the Rugby Pitch. Rugby Union Teams field 15 player with 8 substitutes. Rugby League field 13 on the pitch with 10 substitutes. Atlanta has two professional rugby teams, RUGBY ATL a Rugby Union Team playing in the MLR (Major League Rugby) and the Atlanta Rhinos, playing in the NARL (North American Rugby League)
How to Play Rugby in Atlanta
Rugby is played on a few dedicated and many ad hoc Rugby Pitches around Atlanta. The regulation size of a a Rugby Pitch is is 100m x 70m, approximately the size of a soccer pitch. The basic rules are very simple, in Rugby you score points, a try, by touching the ball down in your opponents try zone at the end of the pitch. Advancing the ball to there is where it gets exciting. The ball, a oblong ball a little bigger than a football, may be carried or kicked towards the try zone. If the ball is passed it must be perpendicular or backwards away from the try scoring zone.
While you are advancing the ball towards the try zone your opponents will tackle and try to win the ball back by stripping it from your hands, causing you to fumble or jackaling it away during the breakdown. Simple enough. You can come out and join a practice, play a game or two and get familiar with some of the finer Laws of Rugby.
With 15 a side Rugby you have your team divided into forwards and backs. Forwards are two Props and a Hooker on the Front row, Two Flankers and Two Locks plus a number 8in the back middle. These players contest the ball and form the scrum.
The Backs, lead by the Rugby Scrum Half and a Fly Half, transfer the ball from the Forwards and the Scrum. The rest of the Backs; Two Wings, Left and Right, Inside and Outside Centers and Full Back. The Backs are your maneuver elements and act as your fast attack.

7s Rugby, an Olympic Sport, is a fast, high scoring game, loaded with action and quick turnovers. The halves are shortened and the pace is ferocious. 10 A-Side Contact
Originating in Malaysia Rugby 10s is a variant of 7s Rugby. In Rugby Tens or 10-a-side rugby, there are only five forwards and five backs in the side. Each half lasts only 10-minutes. Two props, a hooker and two locks make up the forwards, while the backs consist of a scrum-half, fly-half, center, winger, and fullback. Expect fast action, quick turnovers and fast scores on a regulation sized pitch.
